The Way We Are

Since I haven't been around Arlington for 50 years, I'll do

my best here to provide a condensed update of my life.

Here goes....

University of Vermont Board

After graduating from the University of Vermont, I spent a few years as a Pan Am stewardess with the notable "accomplishment" of traveling to Mao's China in 1972 with the White House Press Corps on President Nixon's historic trip. Nothing Pan Am could offer could beat that, so I left, married a fellow University of Vermont graduate, Peter Meyer, moved to Vermont where I have been ever since. Peter and I have now been together 44 years, have two wonderful children and one awesome grandson. Our winters are now spent in Bluffton, South Carolina.

Along the way I went to the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and have had a terrific rewarding career in public policy and administration. I was staff to a US Congressman, served in a Governor's Cabinet, was CEO of the Vermont Medical Association, and my last full time stop was as a Vice President at the University of Vermont. In "retirement" (such an old fashioned word!), I serve as Chair of the Board of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont and on the Board of the University of Vermont Foundation.

After my pride in my family, I am most proud of being a national and world dragon boat champion, competing in the US, Canada, Australia and Hong Kong on the Vermont cancer survivor team. If you don't know about this very cool ancient sport, look it up, and look for dragon boats out on the Potomac! My courageous survivor team mates and I celebrate life everyday.

I'm sorry not to connect with old friends and with classmates I may not have known. I'm sure we all have much to remember, share and celebrate. Enjoy the reunion and each other.

With warm regards,

Karen Nystrom Meyer
