The Way We Are

Comments:    All these years later … Working with Maria and Susan on this project, I’ve reconnected with kids that I grew up with - from Yorktown, Swanson and Tuckahoe Elementary!  I’ve also been in touch with classmates that I really didn’t know back then.  Interesting to realize that everyone then had something to offer if only I had taken the time ...  Young and clueless, I guess we were all just trying to make it through.  Still somewhat clueless I find myself having been divorced but married the last 19 years to Wayne, a great guy who puts up with me quite well.  [We met via a personals ad in a local newspaper where I mentioned I was sports minded and loved to play softball.]  Since then we’ve played a lot of softball together - he’s a great pitcher - we gave it up only last year.  I also love to ski and I love the Eagles!  I am very proud of my son, Rob Buswell, and daughter, Lee Lowery, he with two daughters and she with two boys.  Still, when they come over, the grandkids are the ones that get my attention.  I am fortunate to still have my parents, both in mind and body, at ages 90 and 88! [They amaze me; wonder if I can be that good of a sport at that age, if I get there.]  We have done a lot of traveling with them – the most memorable trip was two weeks in China in 2007.  I never finished college (VCU) but did earn my PhT degree [Putting Hubby Through] from Virginia Tech [what was I thinking?] which I don’t include on my resume.  Even so, I’ve had a 35 year career at the MITRE Corporation, a federally funded research center.  I ended up there quite by accident but the timing was perfect.  I’ve worked with government agencies, the military and found myself in places and situations I could never have imagined.  I’ve lived in McLean just about forever.  And here’s what I’m thinking, we may be older but I’m willing to bet – based on myself and those of you I’ve been talking with - that most of us are still BIG KIDS inside!  Hope it’s true and never changes.

To My Classmates:

I’m sure many of us could go on happily with our lives and never think too much about meeting up again with former classmates.  I just want to say it was rewarding for me when I did.  It can be revealing about how we became the people we are today.  Hope this happens for you.  Maria Lo Bianco, even if you don’t accept it, this whole thing never would have happened if it hadn’t been your dream.  And, Susan Kreer, you had this great idea to turn a contact spreadsheet into an interactive webpage!  How cool is that!  It involved many, many hours of your hard work.  Thanks to you both.  To everyone else, enjoy!
